THE YOUTH URBAN FORUM

Shouf, Lebanon

The Youth Urban Forum had a strong impact by creating a space where young people could move from discussion to action at the city level. As part of the YUP research project: Co-producing Digital Platforms for Youth Inclusive Urban Governance, the forum brought together 19 young people from El Mina and Bar Elias. Together, participants explored how young people can meaningfully shape urban governance in their communities.

"The Youth Urban Forum equipped me with the skills to effectively advocate for the rights of youth and communicate those rights clearly to the relevant authorities."

The forum fostered open dialogue, collaboration, and shared ownership of local urban challenges. Participants collectively reflected on and validated key research insights related to safety, transparency, and impact, ensuring findings were grounded in lived experiences.

Building on this shared understanding, young people engaged in hands-on workshops to brainstorm and co-design ideas for digital platforms addressing local priorities, including sports, environmental issues, and city safety.

Beyond the ideas generated, the forum strengthened practical skills in co-production, critical thinking, and collaborative design, while reinforcing youth leadership and agency in civic processes.

It also helped build trust and lasting connections between young people from different urban contexts, laying a strong foundation for continued collaboration and future co-production activities in El Mina and Bar Elias.

"I was surprised by how aware youth are of what's happening in their cities, and how much experience they already have in urban governance, even if they don’t always recognise it."
