The Women-Led Placemaking for Peacebuilding project in Tripoli aims to enhance the civic participation of women and young women from Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, by placing them at the center of public space decision-making.
Through a structured participatory process, participants moved from identifying spatial challenges to selecting priority sites, co-developing design proposals, and consulting the wider community. Combining capacity building, dialogue across neighbourhoods, and hands-on design workshops, the project ensured that interventions were grounded in women’s everyday experiences and aspirations for safer, more inclusive environments.
Across two engagement cycles, more than 120 women contributed directly to transforming spaces along the former demarcation line, including the public stairs and the market entrance. Their collective vision guided the development of practical, context-sensitive design solutions that respond to local needs while fostering shared ownership between communities.
“Everyone was happy with the project because we designed it to meet everyone’s needs. As people who use this space daily, we truly understand its challenges and how to address them.”

Community events further activated the space through inclusive games and activities for women, children, and families, reinforcing women’s leadership, visibility, and trust in the public realm while transforming the stairs into a vibrant space for interaction and reconciliation.
“When I joined the programme, I never imagined I’d become so deeply involved. Today, I feel immense pride in my contributions. I’m not just participating— I’m making a real impact on my city, influencing key decisions, and shaping the details that matter most to us. As a woman, I feel heard, valued, and empowered to drive meaningful change."
