SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS IN LEBANON

London, UK

2024

Partners: Buro Happold

The Sustainable Materials in Lebanon project, developed in partnership with Buro Happold, focuses on researching and promoting the use of sustainable and natural materials for constructing playgrounds and public spaces across Lebanon. The project aimed to evaluate previously implemented designs and develop a replicable approach to promoting the use of eco-friendly materials.

"This research provides invaluable insights and practical tools to guide future projects towards more sustainable and locally relevant practices."

In collaboration with local partners, we focused on identifying alternative construction materials available locally and assessing their suitability for the specific context. A key outcome was the creation of a selection criteria model to evaluate materials based on sustainability, safety, durability, cost, and time.

These criteria were further refined into detailed sub-categories and properties, ensuring comprehensive and reliable assessments. This model was applied to compare various materials, culminating in the development of a decision matrix. This practical tool provides guidance for material selection in future projects, promoting more sustainable and efficient construction practices.

"This project addresses a crucial gap in sustainable construction by focusing on locally sourced materials. The decision matrix and selection criteria will play a key role in creating more sustainable public spaces across Lebanon."
