The Safe and Inclusive Cities for Girls and Young Women research-into-action brief is part of the Cities4Children’s Cities for Children and Youth research series. It advocates for gender-sensitive urban planning, addressing the unique needs of girls and young women, particularly in informal contexts and the Global South.
"This brief is an invaluable resource, especially its comparative analysis, which will aid urban practitioners in developing inclusive projects and serve as excellent training material. I highly recommend it for its practicality and forward-thinking approach."

Over the past decade, numerous practical guides have been published to improve cities for girls and women. This brief analyses eight key guides, offering gender-sensitive approaches in urban governance, policymaking, planning, design, transport, informal settlement upgrading, and climate resilience.
The brief highlights how girls and women are often excluded from urban planning and governance and provides actionable recommendations for practitioners to create effective, gender-sensitive urban interventions.
It also features two case studies illustrating realworld examples of community engagement in co-producing sustainable and impactful gender sensitive urban interventions, while addressing implementation challenges.
"I thoroughly enjoyed reading the brief. It is well-organised, easy to navigate, and accessible to a wide range of stakeholders."
