The Women-Led Placemaking for Peacebuilding project improves shared public spaces along the former demarcation line between Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen. Through targeted spatial interventions, the project addresses gender inequalities in access to public space while contributing to peacebuilding in a context shaped by prolonged conflict and division.

During the two project cycles, our interventions focused on two key sites: the public stairs connecting the two neighbourhoods and the entrance to the local market.

At the public stairs, the design introduced new seating elements integrated into the existing structure and installed handrails to improve safety and accessibility. The stairs were transformed through the addition of playful and interactive features, including speaking pipes, a slide, and brightly colored steps and flooring.

Three murals were created along the staircase under the theme “For the Love of Coffee,” reflecting shared everyday rituals across both communities. The artwork embeds collective narratives into the built environment, shifting the identity of the stairs from a former frontline into a vibrant and welcoming public space.

“It’s a beautiful feeling to walk past these murals and remember that I painted and helped create this artwork. Knowing that a part of me is here, woven into these walls, fills me with pride.”

At the market entrance, the intervention redefined the threshold of the space. A new seating area was installed, and a tree was planted to provide shade and improve comfort. A bright, visible sign strengthened the entrance’s presence, while a protective barrier was added to prevent motorbike access, enhancing safety and reinforcing the space’s pedestrian character.

“The greatest achievement of this project is giving these women a voice and an active role in revitalising their neighbourhoods. They showed that community participation can bring real change, build meaningful relationships, and bridge differences while strengthening solidarity.”
