The 2024 escalation of the Israel–Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon has profoundly affected children, leaving many displaced and in urgent need of support. In response, we have remained steadfast in providing relief through creative activities and safe spaces, fostering resilience in the Karantina neighbourhood.

We engaged directly with 60 children, transforming our previously rehabilitated public spaces in the neighbourhood into vital community hubs. These spaces served as havens where displaced and local children could find relief, process their emotions, and connect with one another.

“During the activity, I was able to disconnect, even if just for a moment, from the terrible situation. I forgot that I am displaced and away from my home, and now I feel more relaxed.”

Activities included body mapping to express feelings, interactive circus shows, theatre performances, and games to find moments of joy amid the challenges. The adolescent girls from our Safe Spaces for Girls continue to find comfort and a sense of belonging in these spaces.

Over time, these areas have evolved into essential hubs where displaced and local children – especially girls- can play, flourish, and build meaningful connections. The activities culminated in a ceasefire celebration, marked by the reopening of the Karantina Public Park. Filled with music, dance, and play, the event restored the park’s role as a space for healing and hope for the entire community.

“These activities bring light to our children’s lives, helping them feel safe and valued. It reminds us of the importance of investing in spaces where they can just be kids again.”
