Promoting the Naturalisation of Public Spaces through Social Inclusion and Ecosystem Services is a MedCities regional initiative spanning Lebanon, Jordan, and Tunisia, promoting greener and more inclusive public spaces across the Southern Mediterranean.

It demonstrates how underutilised urban public spaces can be transformed into inclusive, climate-responsive, and socially vibrant environments through participatory planning and nature-based solutions.

In close collaboration with El Mina Municipality, local stakeholders, and community groups—including youth, children and caregivers, football teams, and people with disabilities—the project ensured that local voices informed decision-making and design outcomes. A public park in El Mina was identified as a site for intervention.

“In summer, it becomes very difficult to stay outside because there is no shade and the heat is intense. If there were more trees and places to sit, we could spend more time here, especially with children and older people.”

Participatory activities and co-design workshops identified barriers such as poor accessibility, limited shade and basic services, heat stress, and flooding, while also revealing the site’s ecological and social potential.

These insights informed a preliminary design that integrates accessible and permeable pathways, shaded community areas, inclusive play and fitness spaces, increased tree planting, solar lighting, and rainwater management solutions.

Together, these interventions aim to enhance environmental awareness, social inclusion, and climate resilience. The next phase focuses on implementing the proposed interventions in coordination with El Mina Municipality.

“I enjoy walking here because it is quiet. There is little noise pollution, and I can hear the birds without feeling overwhelmed. However, I need assistance to move around, as the paths are not accessible for me."
