The Global Youth Exchange marked a key milestone in the YUP research project, Co-producing Digital Platforms for Youth-Inclusive Urban Governance. The exchange strengthened citizen scientists’ capacities while fostering peer learning and shared insights on youth participation and digital platforms across diverse urban contexts.

Sixteen citizen scientists from Lebanon and Indonesia participated in a five-day exchange in Kuala Lumpur grounded in participatory, non-formal learning. The programme centred youth-led and peer-based approaches, combining learning by doing with collective reflection through group work, simulations, creative exercises, and open dialogue. Participants worked across mixed and city-based teams, enabling shared knowledge production and inclusive discussion on power, representation, and collaboration with local governments and city stakeholders.

"What stood out to me was the exchange of insights between the citizen scientists, not only during structured sessions but also through informal conversations, especially when comparing the similarities and differences between their cities."

Creative and reflective methods, including journaling, writing, and arts-based activities, supported deeper reflection on learning journeys, surfaced diverse perspectives, strengthened peer networks, and generated insights that informed academic outputs and wider policy discussions on youth-inclusive urban governance.

"When I go back to Bar Elias, I want to really turn what I've learnt into action—to keep the youth voice loud, active, and connected to meaningful change."
